L'Umbracle

L' Umbracle [ lumbɾakle ] ( Valencian for, sun roof 'or' shade house ') is a cultural multifunctional building in the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias in Valencia, Spain.

The Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava created with the Umbracle one with over 17,500 m² (320 meters long and 60 meters wide ) oversized portal as an entrance to the " City of Arts and Sciences ". In its top floor there is a palm-lined, and other native plants outdoor gear, which is covered by 55 fixed and 54 floating, white arches. The Paseo del Arte is a freely accessible exhibition of sculptures by contemporary artists (such as Francesc Abbot, Yoko Ono, Juan Ripollés, Jean Claudi Farhi or Laurence Jenkell ). Inside the building, next to the parking garage is also a disco which is used in the summer under the name L' Umbracle Terraza well as open-air disco and in winter as a club Mya.

Plant diversity

Over 50 different plant species, mainly from the area of Valencia, but also from tropical regions, are located here. The garden is bordered by exactly 99 large palm trees, 78 palm trees and 62 small bitter orange trees. There are also 42 different species of native shrubs, such as cistus ( Jaras ), Wild Pistachio ( Lentiscos ) Buddleia ( Budleias ), spring bushes ( Plumeros ) or plumbago ( Plumbagos ), as well as 16 magic flowers plants ( Don Juan de Noche ) and numerous various climbing plants, including honeysuckle ( Madreselvas ) and bougainvilleas, birdsfoot trefoil ( Lotus ), violet ( Agatea ), Mesembryanthemum ( Aptemias ) and lantana ( Lantana ), and aromatic plants such as rosemary and lavender.

Etymology

The name comes Umbracle umbraculum from the Latin word, which means " shade -giving ", this refers to the 18-meter- high arches who donate the shade of the palm trees promenade.
