L'Unità

L' Unità is a daily newspaper of the Italian left. It was founded on February 12, 1924 by Antonio Gramsci and was in the period 1924-1991, the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party of Italy (PCI).

After the failed assassination attempt on Benito Mussolini of 31 October 1926, the newspaper was together with the Avanti! the Italian Socialist Party banned, but appeared until the liberation of Italy in 1945 in the underground. In the 1980s, L' Unità reached a daily circulation of 239,000 copies, and in 1989 the later Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D' Alema was, director of the newspaper. As of 1987, the party-affiliated newspaper of the Communist a stock part with equity and foreign exchange rates adopted for the first time after 59 years in the newspaper.

On 28 July 2000 L' Unità presented for financial reasons a production, but in order on 28 March 2001 again with a reduced edition to appear ( 62,000 copies in February 2005).
