L. Scott Caldwell

Laverne " L. " Scott Caldwell ( born April 17, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actress who is best known for her role Rose Henderson in the ABC television series Lost.

Overview

A native of Chicago Caldwell began her career in 1978 as a member of the Negro Ensemble Company. They thus got leading roles in plays by: Wole Soyinka, Athol Fugard, Neil Simon and Regina Taylor. Caldwell earned her degree in Theater Arts at Loyola University Chicago. She has an extensive background in feature films, theater and television. Among her most successful films and series include: Judging Amy, Lost, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Southland, JAG, Chicago Hope, City of Angels and Promised Land. In 2010, she also played in the short film starring Lisa Trotter. L. Scott Caldwell received a Tony Award for her role as Bertha Holly in Joe Turner 's Come and Gone.

Life

Caldwell, the middle child in the family was, as Laverne Scott in Chicago, Illinois, was born. She grew up in the southern half of Chicago in the Woodlawn neighborhood. After leaving school she went to the theater. There she developed her interest in acting. Even in her early years, she knew she wanted to be an actress like Bette Davis and Loretta Young. During her time at the Hyde Park High School, she joined in parallel also in the drama club. One day, her class went to a performance of the play A Day of Absence. It was the first time that they saw professional "black" people playing on stage. After graduation, in 1967, Caldwell attended Northwestern University. She left the university after a year and worked full time as Operatorin. Later, she earned a bachelor's degree in theater and communications. She married John L. Scott Caldwell Caldwell. They had a son named Ominara. In 1980 she got a divorce and she married in 2004 the director, photographer and artist Dasal Banks, who died in 2005.

Career

Caldwell taught at the Chicago High School of the Performing Arts. She also worked at the Chicago Council Fine Arts. In 1978, L. Scott went to New York to audition there at the Uta Hagen 's school. While they waited to be called up, she saw a display of the Negro Ensemble Company. After her audition, she took the subway to the NEC. When she was there, she was wearing the same pieces before they had previously put forward, and has been accepted by both schools. While Caldwell spent her first season at the NEC, she was allowed to perform some pieces.

In December 1984, while working in Play of Giants, Caldwell was hit by a car. She suffered a severe back injury and could not work for two years. Shortly after winning the Tony Awards, which she received for her role as Bertha Holly, L. Scott moved to Southern California to work in the film and television industry. She took orders from the U.S., from Canada and South Africa. Caldwell is an active member of different groups and advocates for the rights of women around the world.
