La Asunción

La Asunción (founded in 1562 by Pedro González ) is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta. During its history, the town changed its name several times and was called Villa del Espíritu Santo, Valle de Santa Lucia and La Margarita.

The city is located 67 meters above sea level in the east of the island of Margarita. The population is 28.309 (as of October 30, 2011). At La Asunción, the Santa Rosa castle is located.

La Asunción is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Margarita. Episcopal church is the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Cathedral.
