La Caldera Department

The Department of La Caldera is one of 23 administrative units of the Salta Province in northwestern Argentina. It is in the north of the province of Salta, bordered to the north by the province of Jujuy, to the east by the department of General Güemes, to the south by the department capital and to the west by the department of Rosario de Lerma. The capital of the department is the same La Caldera.

Geography

The Department of La Caldera is located in the north of the Valle de Lerma, and is very mountainous. In the far northwest of the highest mountains are: the Cerro Negro with about 5,000 m above sea level, the Cerro Matadero and the Cerro Chapeau. More towards the center are the Cerros Alfo, Yaretas and Capanario and in the center of the department of Cerro Pajas Blancas or Cerro San Alejo. Are located on the border to the south the Sierra Vaqueros and the Cerro Pacará. On the east side of the Valle de Siancas, which runs in a north -south direction along the Ruta Nacional 9, located on the east side of the mountain peaks of the Gallinato, the Cerro Velazco and the Cerro Pelado. In the far northeast of the Cuchilla de la Trampa and the Loma Pelada rise up. The Morro de la Despensa, Los Peñones, Mesada del Aserradero, Monte Paraíso and the Sierras de Santa Gertrudis is located on the eastern border of the department.

The largest watercourse in the department is the current flowing from north to south Río La Caldera with its tributaries: Arroyo Pajarito, Río Santa Rufina, Río San Alejo and Río Wierna. After the confluence with the Río Wierna the Río La Caldera takes its name until the pathways to the Río Vaqueros, where both continue to flow under the name Río Mojotoro. The tributaries of the Río Río Vaqueros are the Lesser and the Arroyo Castellanos.

To the east of the department of the Río de las Pavas, Arroyo de los are porongos, Cañada del Tigre, Arroyo de los Matos and Arroyo del Gallinato. In the north of the Río La Caldera is dammed reservoir to Campo Alegre.

Economy

Agriculture is primarily tobacco of the variety Virginia, followed by corn, oats, barley, green peas, fodder plants, pumpkins, tomatoes and other vegetables. The livestock industry includes the production of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses. In forestry, there are cedar, walnut family, pines and willows. Lead, silver and zinc are the mining deposits in the department.
