La Calera (Chile)

The Chilean city of La Calera has 49 503 inhabitants (2002 ) and is situated in the Región de Valparaíso Province quillota. La Calera is located at the junction of the Panamericana Norte with the route Valparaíso - Mendoza ( Argentina). Therefore, many service providers have settled in the area in recent times.

Economy

In the city there is a cement factory. It is the oldest and largest such factory in South America and locally principal employer. The climate allows the cultivation of tropical fruits, mainly avocados and Cherimoyas. Earlier it was dismantled in La Calera limestone for cement factory, but the stocks are now exhausted.
