The port city of La Ceiba is located on the north coast ( Caribbean coast) of Honduras. It has over 200,000 inhabitants and is considered the gateway to the Islas de la Bahía.

The common saying in Honduras ' Tegucigalpa thinks, San Pedro Sula works, La Ceiba celebrates " characterizes the city very well - is celebrated at every opportunity.

The name La Ceiba has its origin in a giant ceiba tree that stood near the beach and the port workers and the general public provided shade. Of the natives of the place is often called la bella Ceibita; translated as: " pretty little Ceiba ".

The structure of the city is typical of a Spanish colonial city and takes place in a grid system: There are two parallel main streets ( Avenida San Isidro and Avendida 14 de Julio ), which are at right angles to the beach. The streets running parallel to the beach are numbered.

Economy and infrastructure

The Standard Fruit Company, the most important banana exporter of Honduras, has its administrative center in the city, their plantations dominate the landscape in the north of Honduras. Also grown in the surrounding pineapple is an important agricultural product which is like the banana run over the harbor, the second largest in the country.

The city is attributed enormous potential in the development of ecotourism - is it but between several major National Parks of Honduras ( Pico Bonito National Park, Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve ).

West of the town is the Goloson airport.

La Ceiba is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of La Ceiba. Several universities - public and private - have their location in the city.
