La Chaux-du-Dombief

La Chaux -du- Dombief is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

La Chaux -du- Dombief is located 890 meters above sea level. M., about 15 km south of the city Champagnole (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in an elevated position on the west slope of the Dombief, south of the viewpoint Pic de l' Aigle, northwest of the high plateau of Grandvaux.

The area of ​​21.65 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges and terrain longitudinal troughs, which are oriented towards south-southwest - north- northeast, according to the strike of the Jura Mountains in the area. The central part of the municipal area is occupied by the valley of the Dombief. History

The origin of the settlement in the region of La Chaux -du- Dombief is the Priory Saint -Vincent, which was founded in the 6th century by St. Desiderius on the island of La Motte in the Lac de la Motte. The monks reclaimed the area under cultivation and thus put the foundation for the development of hamlets and villages. The priory was destroyed in the 17th century.

The settlement of La Chaux -du- Dombief is first mentioned in the 12th century under the name Lachal -du- Dombiez. Located on the saddle at the upper entrance to the cluse d' Ilay settlement was fortified in the early 14th century and in 1335 received certain liberties granted. It was the center of the barony Aigle, which belonged at that time the family Chalon- Arlay. A castle controlled the important route of Lons -le- Saunier over the Jura Mountains in the Swiss Mittelland. Castle and village were occupied by French troops in 1668. With 528 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) La Chaux -du- Dombief one of the small towns in the Jura. Economy and infrastructure

La Chaux -du- Dombief was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially livestock and dairy farming, as well as by the forestry village. The village is traffic- technically quite well developed. It lies on the main road N78, which runs from Lons -le- Saunier to Saint -Laurent -en- Grandvaux. Further road links exist with Doucier, Le Frasnois and Champagnole.
