La Convención Province

The province of La Convención is one of the 13 Peruvian provinces that make up the Cusco region. It is the largest province in the region and at the same time forms its northern end. To the north it borders the region of Junín and the Ucayali Region, on the east by the region of Madre de Dios, on the west by the Ayacucho and Apurimac regions, to the south by the provinces Paucartambo, Calca, Urubamba and Anta.

The province of La Convención is divided into 10 districts:

Camisea gas project

The Camisea project to produce natural gas is one of the largest gas production projects in Peru at all. At the moment it is still in the development phase, but is expected to produce gas for one day, the Peruvian capital of Lima, as well as for export.

Taking of Hostages 2012

In April 2012, the province of La Convención came in the international media, as around 40 members of the Camisea consortium were believed to have been kidnapped by supporters of the guerrilla Sendero Luminoso. Because of the military pressure the kidnappers let their hostages after a few days again.
