La Dessalinienne

La Dessalinienne, the national anthem of Haiti, was by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the country's founder, named. Dessalines, the leader of the liberation movement, was elected on January 1, 1804 ( the day of the proclamation of independence ) to the Governor General of Haiti for life. As Dessalines received the news, Napoleon Bonaparte had himself crowned emperor in August 1804, he did not hesitate to it ( 8 October 1804) do the same. So Dessalines was also the founder of the First Haitian Empire ( 1804-1806 ). Jean -Jacques Dessalines, as Emperor Jacques I, was assassinated on 16 October 1806.

The text was written by Justin Lhérisson, the melody of Nicolas Geffrard. As national anthem of Haiti it applies since 1904, the centenary of the founding of the state. It replaced the previously used as the national anthem, but not officially adopted as such song Quand nos Aïeux brisèrent leurs entraves from which, however, still considered Präsidialsalut is employed.
