The current territory of La Grande -Motte is an old part of the community Mauguio. The soil of the place consists in part of former vineyards, which were replaced by a nursery because of their low profitability in 1956 and 1958, and on the other hand from old swamp land, which as grazing land for a manade ( "Bull Farm" ) was used. From the sixties of the 20th century, the tourist town of La Grande -Motte with marina, apartments and campsites came out of nowhere. The objective was to redirect tourist flows from the Spanish beach resorts here. The founding as an independent municipality was held on 1 October 1974.
