La Grange (actor)

Charles Varlet known as La Grange, (* 1635 in Montpellier, † March 1, 1692 in Paris) was a French actor. He played in the troupe of Moliere and is considered one of the most important actors of his time.

Life

Charles Varlet lost both parents early and grew up with his two siblings with a guardian on. The name La Grange, which he later adopted, was the maiden name of his mother, Marie de la Grange. At the age of 14 he ran away from home and joined a traveling troupe actor.

It is not known how he made Moliere's acquaintance. The only certainty is that he replaced in November 1658, replacing the ailing Joseph Bejart in Moliere's play The careless. After Béjart's death, he became a regular member of Moliere's troupe, where he is a pillar of the ensemble was very fast usually in the role of the young lover.

In 1672 he married Marie Ragueneau, one of the actresses of the troupe.

After Moliere's death, he took over the direction of the force.
