La Janda

La Janda is a Spanish comarca in the center of the province of Cádiz in Andalusia. The name originally has towards the lagoon of La Janda, which extends over an area north of Tarifa.

The comarca includes the municipalities of Alcalá de los Gazules, Barbate, Benalup -Casas Viejas, Conil de la Frontera, Medina -Sidonia, Paterna de Rivera and Vejer de la Frontera with a total of 87 797 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Geography

La Janda is bordered to the north by Campiña de Jerez, on the west by the Bay of Cadiz and the Atlantic Ocean, to the south of Campo de Gibraltar and on the east by a very small piece of the Serranía de Ronda in the province of Málaga.

Landscape

The Comarca is known for its almost endless sandy beaches of excellent quality. Through the territory of Río Barbate, which is supplied with the Celemínstausee the region with water flowing. The Cape Trafalgar in the municipality of Barbate is a particularly impressive freak of nature. A large part of the comarca is located in the National Park Los Alcornocales with the sights Cueva del Tajo de las Figuras and the Sierra del Aljibe.
