La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is a residential area and a stretch of beach in the district of La Jolla San Diego, California.

Location

The 1.6 kilometer long beach is located north of the cliffs of La Jolla Cove, Black's Beach and downtown La Jolla south of Torrey Pines State Park. The famous pier of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is located in the north of La Jolla Shores. The residential area of ​​La Jolla Shores is located directly east of the beach.

Use

As the water depth increases only slowly in this stretch of beach, and the reefs keep the waves small, the beach is a popular tourist destination. He is also a popular starting point for kayakers and divers. Some of the episodes of the TV series Beach Patrol were filmed here.

San Diego -La Jolla Underwater Park

Seaward of La Jolla Shores is the San Diego -La Jolla Underwater Park, which extends north to the Black's Beach. It was founded in 1970 and covers an area of about 24 square miles of ocean floor and coastal. The park has two artificial reefs, one located in 21 meters, the other in twelve feet of water depth. Behind the shelf slope, the sea depth abruptly increases to about 150 meters, at the La Jolla Canyon even depth of 180 meters are reached near the coast. At this edge to a diverse marine life community has formed, even whales are occasionally observed here from the beach. There is an extensive Tangwälder at the outer edges of the slope. The park is the most popular diving destination for snorkelers and scuba divers in San Diego County.
