La Jument

Phare de la Jument ( Lighthouse of the mare ) is the name of a lighthouse on a rock 2 km off the southwest tip of the island of Ouessant, which lies about 20 km off the coast of Brittany. Its scope is between 19 and 21 miles.

The island is located in dangerous waters and is therefore today marks of not less than five lighthouses. The construction of the Phare de la Jument goes back to a shipwreck on June 17, 1896 which killed more than 250 people. Charles Eugène Potron possessed testamentary under the impression of the shipwreck of the British ship Drummond Castle, which was wrecked on the rocks off the Ile d' Ouessant that for 400,000 francs from his estate a lighthouse at the dangerous spot to be built.

With the construction of the octagonal tower that would eventually cost 850,000 francs, was started in 1904, and the first beacon was taken into operation in 1911, but was finally completed and saved the tower until 1940. It has a height of 47.40 m and a Lighting range of 19-21 miles and is anchored by more steel cables in rock.

On December 21, 1989 Jean Guichard made his famous photograph this lighthouse - for which he was awarded the second prize of the World Press Photo Awards ( Press Photo of the Year ) - which shows the lighthouse keeper Théodore Malgorn, a skilled auto mechanic on the lower handle. At the very moment when he stepped in front of the door, struck the tower from the back of a huge wave that had piled up a storm about 10 Beaufort. Malgorne heard the sound of Guichard's helicopter, so I went to the door. He realized his mistake in time and escaped unharmed back into the stairwell of the building, before the wave could beat up on him. Waves of this type can shake the tower and cause considerable damage. So windows are occasionally destroyed, bent the railing and been torn even the front door.

The tower is automated since 1991 and no longer inhabited. Théodore Malgorn has since worked on the lighthouse Phare du Ile d' Ouessant Créac'h on.

In the movie The wife of the lighthouse keeper by Philippe Lioret the tower serves as a backdrop.

About the history of the lighthouses of l' Ouessant informed a museum on the island.
