La Londe-les-Maures

La Londe- les- Maures is a commune with 9918 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department of Var. It lies on the Côte d' Azur in the bay of Hyères.

Geography

The municipality covers 79 km ² at the foot of the Massif des Maures. For about 75% of the area is forested, 22 % used for agriculture (of which 1170 hectares for the wine ) to 3% are building. In the village there is the marina " Miramar " which counts with more than 1,000 berths at the quay and pontoon to the largest of the Var. Located opposite the Iles d' Hyères, La Londe- les- Maures is a much-used starting point for crossings to the islands.

History

The first human settlements date back to around 2500 BC, witnessed by the Dolmen of Gaoutabry. The dolmen was discovered in 1876 north of the present settlement. According to archaeological findings, it dates from the late Neolithic period. Many ceramic and tool fragments show the presence of people, although so far no remains have been found of settlements. In 1988, the site was classified as a Monument Historique. In later times, the area was probably populated by other peoples. Unique archaeological evidence for this but most are not.

Attractions

The main tourist area of La Londe- les- Maures is summer tourism. Number and extent of beaches characterized the community of just how special microclimate that gives the resort more than 300 sunny days a year.

In the Jardin botanique de La Londe et ornithologique on, a selection of exotic birds - 450 animals from 80 species from Asia, Africa and South America - and rare plants to be admired.
