The island group is located on the Strait of Bonifacio off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, between Sardinia and Corsica. It forms the National Park of La Maddalena archipelago, which is to be expanded with Corsican nature reserves to a cross-border park. The islands are very rocky and have very nice beaches. The municipality covers an area of 49.37 km ², the population density is 236.33 inhabitants / km ².

History

The main town by the name of La Maddalena island of the same name was founded by Corsican shepherds. The local dialect, called Isulanu, is a mix between gallurese ( a variant of the Sardinian ) and Corsican with influences by the dialect of Genoa. At La Maddalena for a long time was a naval base and an arsenal of the Italian Navy. From that time still bear witness to a number of buildings, including the " Admiral House " ( admiralty ). Some other buildings are still used by the Navy (among the non-commissioned officer school). 1793 a spectacular battle took place at La Maddalena, in the course of a French fleet and landing forces were (partly under the command of the future emperor Napoleon Bonaparte standing) beaten by a few ( local ) men under the command of Sergeant Domenico Millelire.

The island of Caprera belonged to the Italian national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi, who also spent his evening there, died there and was buried there.

Economy and Transport

Main income sectors of the islands are tourism and a small military base. The U.S. Navy maintained on Santo Stefano from August 1972 to February 2008 a nuclear submarine base. During the Cold War up to 2600 people there were busy. In September 2007, the USS Emory S. stationed there Tender Country (AS -39) was removed and completely dissolved the base a few months later. The local population had partially vehemently against the presence of nuclear submarines in the area of the Sardinian- Corsican National Park. The former Italian and American bases will be remodeled for the purpose of tourism ( yachting). Problems raises the professional reintegration of former civilian employees.

La Maddalena can be reached by boat from Palau on Sardinia. In the high season car ferries connect up to 80 per day, the La Maddalena with the Sardinian mainland. There is a bridge to the neighboring island of Caprera.
