La Paz (Baja California Sur)

La Paz on the map of Baja California Sur

La Paz is the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur and an important regional commercial center. In 2010, the city had 215 178 inhabitants. It is located on the southeast side of the California peninsula ( Baja California ), at the output of the Gulf of California in the Pacific Ocean, between the coastal mountains and the Bay of La Paz

Traffic

La Paz is accessible by air via the Manuel Márquez de León International Airport. Two ferry there from the city to the mainland: one to Mazatlan in the southeast ( 440 km ) and to Topolobampo, near Los Mochis in the north- east ( 220 km ).

Economy

Economic activities are in addition to the industry ( including silver mining) and fishing (about pearl fishing ) and agriculture. In the area of tourism, many residents are also employed.

Since the survey in 2000 (at that time approximately 163,000 inhabitants), the population continues to rise and is now (2012 ) almost a quarter of a million inhabitants. One reason for this is certain that La Paz with an average income of $ 27 per day has the highest standard of living in Mexico, while the lowest average wage is U.S. $ 4.35. Therefore, many immigrants come from poorer regions to La Paz and Baja California to achieve a higher standard of living or to support their families in their home countries.

Research and Education

In La Paz, three of the leading research institutes in Latin America are located in marine biology. The research conditions here are favorable, since there is a large variety of water zones with different living conditions in the Gulf of California. This has also attracted other educational institutions, so that La Paz today has a very high level of education and the largest number of environmental experts in Mexico.

Tourism

Ecotourism is by far the best tourist source of income, because people come to see the attractions of the sea (eg, gray whales ) and also the diversity of species on land. Many of the islands in the Gulf of California are available as World Heritage Bio - Reserves under UNESCO protection since 2005. The Holy Spirit ( Espiritu Santos ) island group, which limits the Bay of La Paz in the southeast, is the preferred tourist destination: here you can dive, snorkel, kayak. Easily accessible are well-known resorts such as Cabo San Lucas ( 150 km south) at the extreme southern tip of the peninsula.
