The establishment was from 7 May 1881 decided by decree of the founder of La Plata and the governor of Buenos Aires Dardo Rocha. The construction began in 1883, one year after the Paris Observatory instruments to Argentina sent to observe the transit of Venus, which harbored a considerable scientific interest and was well suited for the observation of the location. The main instruments are a 80 cm reflecting telescope, excellent for its time instrument, and a 43 cm refractor, both manufactured by the company Gaultier.
