La Roche-Bernard

La Roche -Bernard is a commune in the Morbihan department in Brittany region. It has 726 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), it is 38 m above the sea, high above the river Vilaine, about ten kilometers before it reaches the sea.

The town was founded in 919 by the Normans. In the labyrinthine Old Town is the town hall still has buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. On a ledge in front of the place are two cannons that are reminiscent of a warship that sank in a sea battle with England in 1759.

La Roche -Bernard is the gateway to Brittany. The river Vilaine is here spanned by a suspension bridge, which was inaugurated in 1960. It replaced the old suspension bridge from 1911, which was destroyed in 1944. The remains of the two ramps can be seen today next to the new bridge.
