The La Sal Mountains as seen from Arches National Park from

The La Sal Mountains, and La Sal Range, are a mountain range in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Utah in the counties of San Juan and Grand. The La Sal Mountains are located in the Manti -La Sal National Forest. The highest point of the mountain range is the 3877 m high Mount Peale.

In the early summer of 1776, the Spanish missionary Silvestre Vélez de Escalante spotted on the horizon rising from the desert white snowy peaks of the La Sal Mountains. Since he could not imagine to see in this hot inhospitable area snow, he held the white crests of pure salt and named the mountain range Sierra de la Sal, ie " the salty mountains ". In 1899 the German scientist Carl Purpus made an expedition to the La Sal Mountains and explored the then largely unknown cactus flora of this region.
