La Salle Parish, Louisiana
The La Salle Parish (French: Paroisse de La Salle ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 14,890 inhabitants and a population density of 8.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The seat of the Parish Administration ( Parish Seat) is Jena.
Geography
The Parish is located northwest of the geographic center of Louisiana, is in the east about 60 miles from the Mississippi, located in the north about 120 miles from Arkansas and has an area of 1716 square kilometers, of which 100 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes:
History
La Salle Parish was formed in 1908 from parts of Catahoula Parish. The name goes back to Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

According to the census in 2000 lived in La Salle Parish 14,282 people in 5,291 households and 3,798 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.13 percent White, 12.20 percent Black or African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.20 percent from other races groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.82 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 5,291 households out of which 33.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 25.7 percent of all households and 13.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.03.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 26.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,189, and the median income for a family was $ 36,197. Males have a median income of $ 27,431, women $ 19,697. The per capita income was $ 14,033. 14.9 percent of families 18.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 23.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 18.9 percent of those 65 years.
