The Sila

The Sila is a mountain massif in Calabria, Italy. The approximately 1,500 km ² extensive mountainous region consists of three parts, the Sila Grande, Sila Piccola and the Sila Greca. The highest mountain ( Monte Botto Donato ), in the Sila Grande, reaches a height of 1928 meters. Here you will find ski slopes, as it in the winter months are considerable amounts of snow in the Sila. In the mountains the rivers Neto, Amato, Corace and Crati. The mountain range falls in the west to the city of Cosenza steeply.

Even in ancient times there were in the former Bruttium a mountain called Sila, of which is not known, however, whether it corresponded to the entire region so designated today. The name is related to the Latin silva = " forest ". The mountains are heavily forested, predominantly the Laricio jaw. The largest town is San Giovanni in Fiore.

The name Sila Greca stems from the immigrant in the Middle Ages Albanians who were Orthodox faith. The Romanesque church of San Demetrio Corone in San Adriano has Byzantine elements.
