La Souterraine

La Souterraine ( Occitan La Sotarrana ) is a commune with 5575 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Limousin region. It is located in the department of Creuse, Gueret district, and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of La Souterraine. The inhabitants are called Sostraniennes.

Geography

La Souterraine is located about 30 km west- northwest of Gueret and about 48.5 kilometers north-northeast of Limoges between the rivers Benaize and Sédelle. Here arises the Brame. Through the village, the route national 145 (also European Route 62). The train station of La Souterraine lies on the railway line Aubrais Les -Montauban. The Via Lemovicensis (one of the four pilgrimage routes to Santiago ) leads through the village.

History

Originally, there was a Gallo- Roman settlement in their place later La Souterraine occurred. The name itself indicates a crypt (Latin Subterranea ). So the place was mentioned in a 1268 document. Already in 1017 mentioned the Earl of Crozant, Gerald, the place as Ville Sosterranea. 1019 has started with the construction of the Romanesque church to be converted in 1220 in the Gothic style.
