La Union

La Union is a Philippine province in the Ilocos region on the main island of Luzon. The provincial capital is San Fernando. At La Union, other provinces such as Ilocos Sur to the north, Benguet to the east and borders Pangasinan to the south. The northern boundary of the province of Ilocos Sur is based on the riverbank of the Amburayan to its mouth.

To the west is the South China Sea. In the 1493 km ² area 741 906 people ( census May 1, 2010 ), resulting in a population density of 497 inhabitants per km ². In the province of Ilokano is mainly spoken. Current governor of the province is Victor Ortega.

People and Culture

93 percent of the population are Ilokanos, which mainly belong to the Roman Catholic faith. Smaller communities of Pangasinans live in the south and Igorots at the foothills of the Philippine Cordilleras, and some Chinese in the cities.

Economy

In the province you will find services, manufacturing and agricultural businesses. The Port of San Fernando constantly grows into a bigger and bigger export port and the former American airbase Wallace Air Station was converted into a commercial and industrial area.

Tourism also plays an economic role. The beaches of Bauang and more secluded in the north are popular for water sports.
