La Valette-du-Var

La Valette- du- Var is a town with 20,851 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) of the French Var in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur, on the French Mediterranean coast, between Marseille and Nice, and connects directly east on at Toulon.

History

Already at the time of the Roman Empire the area was as Vallis lata, " the happy valley " known. The Romans built here a " castrum ", a fortified military camp, on the walls of the medieval city wall was founded. In the 2nd World War the town was occupied by the Germans and was liberated in August 1944.

1960 saw the village a boost when settled emigrants from the former French colony of Algeria here.

  • Jean de la Valette, and Vallette, called Parisot, (* 1494 in La Valette- du- Var, France, † August 21 1568 in Birgu, Malta ) was from 1557 until his death in the 49th Grand Master of the Order of Malta and the founder of today's capital of Malta, Valletta.
