La Varenne (Maine-et-Loire)

La Varenne is a commune with 1745 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Maine -et -Loire in the Pays de la Loire. It belongs to Arrondissement Cholet and Canton Champtoceaux. Mayor ( maire ) is since the election on 9 March 2008 (term expires 2014) Daniel Pinier.

Geography

La Varenne is located about 25 km from Nantes on a hill above the valley of the Loire and its tributary Divatte. The village with the church is located on an average height of about 60 m, the municipality lies at an altitude of between one and 82 m above sea level. The municipality covers 14.19 km ² ( 1,419 ha), and a population density of 111 inhabitants per km ². The soil is characterized by sedimentary deposits that originate from the Loire River and its tributaries.

History

La Varenne belonged to the Duchy and the County of Anjou. The parish church was founded in the 11th century.

Demographics

La Varenne had 1793-1911 always more than one thousand residents, the highest level was reached in 1861 with 1,213 inhabitants. Between the censuses in 1921 and 1975, the population was between 800 and 900 residents. Only in recent years resulted in a significant increase in the number of inhabitants.

Economy and infrastructure

La Varenne is being developed by the Department of Road D751, which runs along the Loire from Nantes to Chalonnes- sur -Loire. Employers in the town are agriculture and small local businesses.

Apart from agriculture, cattle breeding and farming wine is grown in the community on a larger scale. There are, for example, four wineries with private sale " La Coindassière ", " Gaigne ," " Le Pavillon " and " Le Vau ". The vineyard is located in the protected designations of origin of Anjou, Coteaux d' Ancenis, Muscadet - Coteaux de la Loire and Gros Plant du Pays Nantais.
