Laakirchen is a town in the district of Gmunden in Upper Austria with 9549 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Gmunden.

Geography

Laakirchen is located on 441 m altitude in Traun quarter. The extension is 7 km from north to south, from west to east 7.7 km. The total area is 32.4 km ². 11.1% of the area is forested, 77.2 % of the area is used for agriculture.

Coat of arms

Blazon: In red with a silver wave beams; the top of the dividing line growing three gold, fan-shaped ears with two leaves, below a silver mill wheel. The municipality colors are red and yellow.

The coat of arms was granted in 1967. The wave bar represents the Traun, the ears are available for agriculture in the region and the water wheel for the paper industry.

History

1996 were uncovered during archaeological excavations in the cemetery Laakirchen parts of a villa rustica from the 2nd to 3rd century AD.

The first written mention of Laakirchen was in 1165 as Lochchirchen. The name is composed of Old High German loch, forest, grove, wood, wood 'or' floodplain forest ' and kirihha ' church ' together. The conversion to lah loh is typical for today's mountain dialects of Krems and Almtal.

Originally in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria lying, was the place since the 12th century the Duchy of Austria. Since 1490 he is the Principality of Austria above the Enns attributed. The construction of the present parish church was probably begun around 1450 and was completed around 1500.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the place was occupied several times. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the village belonged to the Upper Danube. In 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria.

On 9 July 1984, the municipality of Laakirchen was raised to the market town. The last municipal elections were held in 2009. The SPÖ reached 45.8 % ( -16.8 % ), followed by the People's Party 33.6 % ( 5.1 %), the Freedom Party 17.3% ( 8.4 %) and the AAF 3, 3% ( nk ) of the votes.

Sports

The biggest clubs are the ASKOE Steyrermühl, ASKOE Laakirchen and the UNION Laakirchen.

The ASKO Steyrermühl is the oldest club in Laakirchen and consists of the sections soccer, tennis, gymnastics, archery, table tennis, badminton and darts.

Economy and infrastructure

Two paper mills, four metal processing companies, as well as several businesses form the economic backbone of the community. Laakirchen is the largest industrial town in the district of Gmunden and the second largest in the southern Upper Austria.

Traffic

Laakirchen is located on the Traun Valley Railway Lambach - Gmunden, which is operated only in freight transport since 1988.
