Laba Sosseh

Laba Badara Sosseh ( born March 12, 1943 in Bathurst, now Banjul, Gambia; † September 20, 2007 in Dakar, Senegal ) was an senegambischer salsa musician.

Life

Laba Sosseh was born in the capital of the later West African country Gambia. His father was Senegalese and his mother was Gambierin. In the early 1960s he moved to Dakar in Senegal in 1966 and took on the " 1st World Music and Arts Festival" in part, in which he was a celebrated musician. Sosseh spoke fluent Spanish, Creole and several Cuban dialects. Inspired by the Cuban music of the 1940s and 1950s, he sang salsa music and played with Ibra checkout, later a founding member of the Super Etoile de Dakar, in various clubs in Dakar and in the region. At times he was a member of the group Star Band du Dakar.

In 1990, he, who is titled as "King of the African Salsa" received, for his musical work with "The Gold Disc" as the first African artist a ceremony in Havana, Cuba.
