Labial-palatal approximant
The voiced labiopalatale approximant is a semi-vowel (or Halbkonsonant ), which does not occur in the German language. Its symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet is [ ɥ ]. One can describe it as a mixture of semi- consonants [w ] and [ j], it sounds very bright
Characteristics
- Articulation mode: Spirant (articulation organs are easily contracted )
- Despite the designation as labiopalatal is in reality to describe [ ɥ ] rather than labialisierter Palatal: it is articulated with the middle or the back of the tongue against the hard palate, the lips are rounded while
- [ ɥ ] is voiced, which means the vocal cords vibrate at its articulation
- It is an oral consonant: the air is expelled through the mouth only
- [ ɥ ] is central: the air is above the middle of the tongue is ejected, not on the sides.
- As can glide on [ ɥ ] no accent lie. This is only on the following vowel.
Occurrence
The French language has the approximants / ɥ /, and that whenever u is in hiatus (before another vowel). The combination of / y / vowel is realized as the sliding / ɥ / vowel. Particularly common and are clearly audible in French connections with the bright vowels ( / e /, / ɛ /, / i /, / œ /, / ø / ):

Connections from / ɥ / with dark vowels ( / ɑ /, / a /, / o /, / ɔ /, / u / ) are less clearly distinguished in French by / y / vowel. For an approximation to / y / occurs in some speakers already in connection with / œ /.
Especially in Belgium some speakers tend to / ɥ / generally be replaced by / w /.
