Labib Habachi

Labib Habachi ( born April 18, 1906 in Mansura, † 18 February 1984 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian Egyptologist.

Life

Habachi visited the Coptic School in Mansura and the Maronite school in Cairo. In 1924 he began studying mathematics at the University Fu'ad I. ( later Cairo University ), but moved to the Egyptology, in which he became in 1928 the Bachelor a year later. In 1930 he was appointed inspector of the Egyptian Antiquities Service. He had items held in Aswan, Luxor, Cairo, Edfu, Fayum, Abydos, Sohag, and Tanta Zagazig. In 1944 he was appointed Chief Inspector of Upper Egypt. Apart from 1950 to 1951 when he worked at Saqqara, he had held this office until 1958 and was appointed on to the sub -director of field work. This office he held until 1960. After that, he was a consultant for the Nubian archaeological expedition of the University of Chicago Oriental Institute. He became one of the leading archaeologists of his generation in Egypt. He led throughout the country through excavations. In particular, he dug the Heqaib shrine at Elephantine out, discovered the Kamose stele in Karnak and conducted research in Bubastis and Qantir in the Delta.

Habachi 1953 Member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Institut d' Égypte in 1964, 1965 Honorary Member of the Egyptological Institute of the Charles University in Prague and in 1983 the Société Française d' Égypte. He received the Egyptian State Award and a medal first class in the humanities and natural sciences, in 1959 the Italian Order of Merit, in 1973 the Order of Merit of the French Legion of Honour and 1980, the Cross of Honour for Science and Art First Class. 1966 Honorary Doctorate from New York University, he was awarded. In 1978 he was elected Honorary President of the International Association of Coptic Studies.

Habachi was married to Attiya Hanim Kamil Ayad.
