Labuan Bajo

Geographical unit

Situated at the western end of the Indonesian island of Flores Labuan Bajo harbor town (also: Labuan Bajo ) is the administrative seat of the administrative district ( kabupaten ) Westmanggarai ( Manggarai Barat ) in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.

The name of the city means in Indonesian language as much as " port of Bajo ". The Bajau are an originally derived from Sulawesi ethnic group.

Religion

As the population is to a large extent from Bajau, live in Labuan Bajo, in contrast to the otherwise largely Christian Flores relatively many Muslims.

Economy and infrastructure

About 18 kilometers east of the city is a gold mine, which is operated by a Chinese company.

Labuan Bajo only has a ferry terminal also has a small airport ( Komodo Airport ) with regular regional air links, especially to Denpasar (Bali). As port of destination ferry from Sumbawa to Flores, as well as other less frequent ferry connections, Labuan Bajo also has a special significance for the goods and people of the island of Flores in general and thus also for the principle relatively weak tourism in this region.

In Labuan Bajo is the office of the adjacent, for the famous Komodo dragons Komodo National Park. Due to its proximity to the National Park Labuan Bajo is the main starting point for individual tourists who often drive Komodo with fishing boats to the island. Tours in larger groups, however, are organized especially of Bali and Lombok. Because of the diverse flora and fauna of the national park in the sea, there is also a significant diving tourism.
