Lac Blanc (Vosges)

The Lac Blanc ( " White Lake " ) is having a size of 29 hectares the largest lake on the eastern side of the Vosges in the department of Haut-Rhin. The glacial mountain lake is situated at an altitude of 1052 m above Urbeis (French: Orbey ) and Kaysersberg in Alsace.

The Lac Blanc is bounded on the west by the peaty plateau of the Hautes chaumes that drops about 100 meters steep to Lac Blanc at the lakeshore. To the north overlooking the lake, the Col du Calvaire is the winter sports area, named after the lake.

On the south shore of the lake there is a car park with restaurant. From here begins the ascent to the viewpoints Rocher Hans and Observatoire Belmont.

Together with the southern Lac Noir is the Lac Blanc, a pumped storage power plant group. With electric night this water is pumped from the deeper Lac Noir ( " Black Lake " ) in the Lac Blanc and retrieved when peak demand from Lac Blanc again.
