Lac de Montsalvens

Oldest arch dam in Europe

The Lac de Montsalvens is a Swiss reservoir.

The reservoir is on the way to the Jaun Pass, between the towns of Broc and Charmey. The lake fills parts of the two valleys Javroz and Motélon below the village Charmey.

History

It was planned investment on the one hand by the Lausanne Professor Jean Landry (Total planning) and engineer Heinrich Eduard Gruner ( and Alfred Stucky from the engineering firm) from Basel on the other.

At the Grossrats session of 17-18. May 1918 approved the construction of the dam.

The dam Montsalvens could be completed in 1920, and 1921, the lake was filled with water.

The cost of construction of the facility was estimated at 11 million SFr. In the end, the total cost amounted to 21 million SFr but what constitutes an excess of 91%. This cost explosion brought the TPF power plants in the short term in serious financial difficulties.
