Lac du Vernois

The Lac du Vernois [ lak ' dy vɛʀ'noa ] is a lake in the French Jura, in the Jura, around 10 km south of Champagnole in Franche -Comté. It is located at 738 m above sea level. M. on the floor of the town of Le Frasnois and occupies an area of ​​about 7 hectares. The lake is 500 m long, up to 200 m wide and shows the shape of a triangle.

The Lac du Vernois is deposited in a completely closed cavity of the high plateau of Champagnole west of Le Frasnois in which the five lakes region. It is nestled between the forest heights of Sur les Roches ( 849 m above sea level. M. ) in the north and La Grand- Roche ( 871 m above sea level. M. ) in the south. The southern shore is steep and densely forested, while the northern riverside areas are lined with willows. During high stages of the various ice ages, the pool was lined by the Jura glaciers with marl and clay layers, so that despite the karstic underground lake one could emerge.

The Lac du Vernois is fed by the water of some springs on the surrounding slopes. It has no surface drainage, because the water disappears in seepage hoppers on the lake floor. Mountian experiments have shown that the water again becomes apparent in the source Source du Moulin at Chalain.
