Lacanau

Lacanau is a commune in the Gironde department in the region of Aquitaine, about 45 km north-west of Bordeaux. The town has 4460 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) and an area of ​​214.02 km ². The scale at the beginning of the 20th century Lacanau-Ocean, on the Atlantic coast with its beaches is considered suitable as especially for surfers. Three kilometers inland, separated by the dunes and forest from the Atlantic Ocean, lies the Lac de Lacanau, one of the largest lakes in France. At this lake is also the inland point Lacanau.

The town was founded in 1906. In the 70s, the rise Lacanaus began a popular seaside resort. Initially there was the place of simple and sometimes quite large French coast houses. Meanwhile, some concrete buildings can be found. Life in the resort is much more dominated by tourism than at the beginning. Also, the site has expanded to several square kilometers inland.

Regularly you will find the world's elite surfers and wave riders in Lacanau, in order to discharge the World Championships or Cup Series.

The dunes in the area of Lacanau are up to 66 m high, in the nearby Arcachon there is even the highest dune in Europe ( Dune du Pilat, about 110 m).

Since October 2013 there is twinned with the town of Tonning in Schleswig -Holstein.
