Both ships were lost in a storm and the Lady Washington Oregon reached a week before the Columbia and was thus the first American ship on the west coast. The ships were active in the fur and fur trade with the natives of the coast of the Pacific Northwest and then sailed to Canton in China. There, the commanders exchanged the vehicles and the Lady Washington remained in the Pacific during the Columbia headed west in August 1790 again reached Boston.
