Laer

Laer [ la ː r] ( Laor Low German ) is a municipality in the district of Steinfurt, in North Rhine- Westphalia.

Because the case with ae already disagreed with the applicable rules prior to 1996, it has not been modified in accordance with a recommendation of the Standing Committee on Geographical Names.

Geography

The community Laer located 25 km north- west of Münster.

Neighboring communities

Laer borders Horstmar in the West, Steinfurt in the north, old mountains in the east, Billerbeck and Rosendahl in the south.

Boroughs

The municipality consists of the villages Laer Laer and Holthausen.

Holthausen is located about two kilometers south of Laer and has about 600 inhabitants.

History

For the first time Laer was mentioned in 1134 AD, in a charter of Bishop Werner. In 1485 began the construction of the church of St. Bartholomew. In the Spanish- Dutch War in 1592 Laer, Borg Horst and Blank were plundered by the Spaniards.

Until 1803 the town belonged to the Official Horstmar the prince-bishopric of Münster. In Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the Office Horstmar and thus the Laer fell to the County of Salm- Horstmar. In 1806 Laer to the Grand Duchy of Berg and belonged from 1811 to 1813 for France. Based on the decisions taken at the Congress of Vienna agreements Laer 1815 Prussian. 1841, the Office Laer was created to which belonged the communities Laer and Holthausen.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1969, the Office Laer was canceled and the municipality and Laer formed; the neighboring community Holthausen was incorporated voluntarily.

Religions

Approximately 72 % of the 6,900 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2004) are Roman Catholic, 13% are Protestant. 15 % of the population belong to any organized religion.

Culture and sights

Museums

In Holskenmuseum you can watch the wooden shoe over her shoulders. The museum shows how the wood master shoemaker and his family lived and worked and how wooden shoes from different types of wood were produced and sold in typical local forms.

Structures

  • Kappwindmühle: it is now used only for residential purposes. On special occasions, the windmill blades can be operated electrically. Natural Monuments

Near the end of the village on the Darfelder road, lies the heath tree, a 500-year- old court Linde. Below the linden is the " Heidenkrues ", a carved from light gray Baumberger sandstone cross on a high rubble stone base that sits on a brick foundation. The Heide Cross to commemorate the Christianization that is brought, according to legend the two holy Ewalden in context. Originally, the hill was used as a court and burial place. Laer is crossed by the highways L 550, L 555 and L 579, as well as of the county roads K72 and K75. Sports

On October 18, 1908 was the establishment of " Gymnastics and Sports Association Laer 08 " instead. The 100- year anniversary was celebrated accompanied by various actions in 2008.
