Lafarge SA is a global company headquartered in Paris, France. Lafarge, Holcim is behind the second-largest manufacturer of building materials in the world. In Germany, the headquarters of the operating company " cement " since 2012 based in Karsdorf. Both the administration of Austria and the Europe Technical Center are situated in Vienna. The research LCR is located in Isle d' Abeau ( near Lyon, France).

The Group is organized into business units ( divisions): cement, concrete, and aggregates and gypsum. It is present in 79 countries. In 2009, the turnover 15.9 billion euros. The Group employs 78,000 people worldwide.

History

The company was founded in 1833 by Léon Pavin de Lafarge. It built from refractory bricks in a quarry along the Ardèche River. 1864, Lafarge supplied 110,000 tons of limestone to build the Suez Canal.

In 1931, Lafarge expanded its activities to the business gypsum. Eight years later, Lafarge was the largest cement manufacturer in France. The company established in 1956 its first cement plant in the United States and founded Lafarge Cement of North America.

1980 was the merger instead of the Belgian Coppée new name was Lafarge Coppée. 1994 of first operations in China.
