History

The Lafayette County was formed on February 9, 1836 from the Chickasaw country. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a French general and politician who took part on the side of the colonists in the American Revolutionary War and also played an important role in the French Revolution.
