Lafayette Parish, Louisiana

The Lafayette Parish (French: Paroisse de Lafayette ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 221 578 inhabitants and a population density of 317 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Lafayette.

The Lafayette Parish is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Lafayette.

Geography

History

The Lafayette Parish was formed on January 17, 1823 from parts of St. Martin Parish. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette.
