Lagnes

Lagnes is a commune with 1657 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Lagnes is located on the southwestern point of the Monts de Vaucluse between Fontaine -de- Vaucluse, Saumane -de- Vaucluse and Cabrières- d'Avignon, at the entrance of the Regional Natural Park of Luberon, to which the municipality belongs.

History

Some prehistoric settlements were at the archaeological site Claparousse.

Lagnes 1154 is mentioned for the first time as " Lagnas ".

From the eleventh to the thirteenth century the abbey of Saint -André de Villeneuve- lès -Avignon had a church called Sancti Joannis de Greso, which then passed to the Bishop of Cavaillon.

1648, Pope Innocent X, contrary to the promises made to the people who had wished to remain under the rule of Saint- Siège, a fief of the Marquisat favor of Louis de Cambis.

1720 the plague of Marseilles spread coming from in Provence. To protect the Comtat venaissin before plague victims, decided the municipalities in the region to build a 27 km long wall, the so-called Pestmauer, of which some sections are still visible in the community.

In the eighteenth century the rule between the families and Cambis Fortia was divided, which had two different, separated by a courtyard residences inside the castle walls.

During the French Revolution Lagnes was the capital of the canton.

1838 ended the exploitation of iron deposits.
