Lagoa is a city ( Cidade ) and a circle ( concelho ) with 7248 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011) in the Algarve region of southern Portugal.

History

According to historical sources, the first settlements Lagoas ( Port.: Lagoa ) were on the edge of a small lake or pond built, which was later drained for the recovery of agricultural and building land.

The Algarve region was conquered by the Moors when they conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century and the Visigoths displaced. When the area in the 13th century by the Christians ( Reconquista ) was recaptured from the north, was integrated in the Portuguese States Association. Lagoa was part of the territory that was ruled by Silves. On January 16, 1773 boundaries of the new district ( concelho ) Lagoa were established by decree of King Joseph I.. Lagoa was raised in 2001 to the city ( Cidade ).

Beaches

Lagoa is located on the cliffs of the Algarve; lie between the rocks individual bays with sandy beaches, including Praia do Barranquinho, the Praia de Albandeira and Praia da Estaquinha.
