Water quality
Until about 30 years ago, the water was used in boiled state as drinking water, because there was no water supply in many villages of Bela Krajina. For example, the village of Gradac was connected to the drinking water supply until the year 1974.
Because dirty water and waste was untreated into the Lahinja, the water quality was correspondingly poor. Since the construction of the treatment plant in Čnomelj in the years 1994-1996, the water quality improved. Still, many residents use the river today as in the past still waste disposal.
