Laika (company)

Laika is an American animation studio based in Portland, Oregon. The company consists of two compartments, one with the production of animated films and the other is engaged in the production of commercials and music videos. Laika is divided into two departments Laika Entertainment and Laika / house. While the former the production of films dedicated, provides Laika / house computer animated and stop-motion commercials and music videos her. They produced commercials for, among others, Coca Cola, Ben & Jerry's, Kellogg's, Apple, Starbucks and Honda.

History

Laika originated from the Will Vinton Studios, who were known for stop-motion films and commercials even then. In the late 1990s, they found among other things, Nike a great investor. A son of co-founder Phil Knight at this time worked as an animator in the Will Vinton Studios.

Vinton left the studios in 2003 because he had difficulties to finance future productions. Henry Selick was hired as a director. The studios were renamed Laika.

In 2009, Laika closed her department for computer animation and dismissed 63 employees.

Laika Entertainment produced for director Henry Selick computer animated short film Moon Girl ( 2005) and the stop-motion film Coraline ( 2009). After futile attempts to renew his contract, Selick Laika left in October 2009.

In 2012, Laika produced with ParaNorman the first stop-motion film in which using 3D printers, the faces of the characters were created.

Awards

Laika was nominated three times for the Annie Award, won eight Telly Awards and was nominated for the movie Coraline for the Academy Awards 2010. Employees of the company already won two Academy Awards, eleven Emmy Awards and eleven Clio Awards.
