Laisenia Qarase

Laisenia Qarase ( born February 4, 1941) was between 2000 and 2006, the Prime Minister of Fiji. He ran in 2006 for the second time for the ruling party SDL ( Fijian People's Party ) and was re-elected on 18 May 2006 by a narrow absolute majority. His ruling party won 36 of 71 seats in the House of Representatives.

Qarase studied economics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. From 1983 he was at the head of the Development Bank, from 1998, the Commercial Bank of Fiji. He was appointed Senator in 1999. After the failed coup in May 2000, the nationalist leader George Speight Qarase was used on 3 July as head of an interim government.

On 15 March 2001 he dissolved Parliament and scheduled for August 25 elections to. With the indigenous party Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua he triumphed in the vote and was sworn in on 10 September 2001 as head of government.

Beginning of December 2006 the army staged a coup against him. The army chief of Fiji, "Frank" Bainimarama had, on December 4, disarm large sections of the police and stationed his troops at strategic points in the capital, Suva. In a " press conference " in which no questions were allowed, he avoided to talk of a takeover, even though he is supposed to have already formed a transitional cabinet.

After the military coup in late 2006, he retired from politics.
