Lajatico

Lajatico is an Italian village with 1374 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located in Tuscany in the province of Pisa near Volterra. The Mayor called Fabio Tedeschi.

Geography

The municipality covers 72 km ². It is located about 50 km southwest of Florence and 40 km southeast of Pisa.

The main village is situated at 205 meters above sea level, the municipality is located at the lowest point at 50 and the highest point at 628 meters above sea level.

The village lies on the rivers Era, Ragone and Sterza.

In the climatic classification of Italian municipalities Lajatico loves in zone D, GR 1831 / G.

Among the districts ( Frazioni ) include La Sterza, Orciatico and San Giovanni.

The neighboring municipalities are Chianni, Montecatini Val di Cecina, Volterra, Riparbella, Terricciola and Volterra.

History

Lajatico was formerly " because Ajatico Centrum " also called, " Ajatico " and " Lajatici ". 891 there the first document was signed. 1776 Lajatico became independent. In the 19th century, the " Banca Popolare di Lajatico " was founded the only bank of Lajatico.

Economy

Lajatico lives mainly on agriculture, wine and olive oil production.

Notable people and buildings

The world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was born on 22 September 1958 in Lajatico. In 2006, the Teatro del Silenzio was opened by Andrea Bocelli, however, takes place only by a performance annually; the entire rest of the year there is there silence.

  • Chiesa di San Leonardo church in the historic center of Lajatico. Dates back to the 13th century, but was restored in 1853-1856 by the architect Leghorn Angiolo della Valle and changed. The facade dates from the year 1925.
