Lake Alūksne

The Alūksne Lake ( ( German: Marienburg Lake ), Latvian: Alūksnes ezers ) is a body of water in the city Alūksne in Northeastern Latvia. It is the eleventh largest lake in Latvia ( without artificial reservoirs).

The area is hilly and the banks are relatively steep. There are no major tributaries, so the water exchange is slow. The lake water flows over the river Alūksne in the Pededze while the snow melts in the spring in some cases also Gauja river system. On a bay in the south of the city Alūksne was built.

In the lake stands a 800 meter-long peninsula with the cemetery Alūksne. There are also four islands: Cepurīte ( "Little Hat" ), Gara ("long island " ), Tīklu ( " power island " ) and Marija sala ( " Marie Island" ), which is also called Pilssala ( " Castle Island" ). The latter is about 10 hectares, the largest of the four islands, it is accessible via a wooden bridge from the city. There are the ruins of 1342 by the Teutonic Knights built Marienburg. Since the construction of a lock in 1920, the water level is lower.
