Lake County (Colorado)

The Lake County is a county located in the western center of the U.S. state of Colorado. 2000, the population was 7,812. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Leadville.

Geography

Lake County covers an area of 994 km ². Of these, 1.83 percent, or 18 km ², water. The area of Lake County is centrally located in the Rocky Mountains, and is dominated by the high, wooded mountain slopes. In the west the municipality is intersected by the Continental Divide of the Americas.

History

Lake County is one of the 16 original counties of Colorado from 1861, the number has now grown to 64. Originally comprised Lake County a large part of the area of the West of Colorado south and west of the boundaries of present-day Lake County.

In the following decades, Lake County slowly lost territories, as in the south of Saguache County ( 1866) and Hinsdale County ( 1874), southwest of La Plata County ( 1874) and San Juan County ( 1876) and to the west by Ouray County and Gunnison County ( 1877).

Due to the strong reduction in its size, the county seat of Lake County moved frequently within a short time. He was, among other things in: Oro City (1861 ), Lourette (1863 ), Dayton (1866 ) and Granite (1868 ).

1878 Lake County was reduced to an area that only included the present territory and Chafee. On February 8, 1879 Lake County was renamed in Carbonate County. This district existed only two days, then, the area around Chafee County, in the south of carbonates County, separated, and again renamed the remaining north into Lake County. Leadville became the new county seat.
