Lake George (New South Wales)

Lake George is a lake in the southeastern part of New South Wales, north-west of the LGA Palerang Council and 29 kilometers north-east of Canberra in Australia. The lake lies at an altitude of 661 meters. The normally about 15,000 acre lake is relatively shallow and the surface varies regularly greatly depending on the season. Currents and whirlpools have repeatedly caused fatal accidents.

As one of only two freshwater lakes in the higher regions of New South Wales, it is an important resting place for birds during dry periods. It serves 201 bird, 31 mammal species, 29 reptile and 12 amphibian species as habitat.

It is also known a mirage ( mirage ), which leaves the lake appear full when it is empty. Since 1820 he has been some times completely dried out, but mostly it contained water. He was of British settlers after the British King George III. named, however, said in the local language Werriwa.
